Announces 50,000 Plus Effort to Suspend the Law and Restore American Liberties

Boston, MA. . .Today on the stairs of the State House the Civil Rights Coalition announced that their growing grassroots organization is seeking the goal of 49,716 certified signatures by October 7th in order to suspend recently passed H.4885; An Act Modernizing Firearms law, which is aimed at punishing law abiding citizens.

“Here in the birthplace of liberty, I am thrilled how many people and organizations are joining our effort to suspend this unconstitutional law and allow the voters to decide.  Our grassroots team is growing on a daily basis.  That’s why today we are announcing that we are going for the 50,000 plus certified signatures to suspend the law until 2026,” said Toby Leary, Campaign Chairman and owner of Gun Works.

This is the first time in decades an organization has collected signatures to immediately suspend a law.  To put the issue on the ballot in 2026, the Civil Rights Coalition needs to collect 37,287 signatures.  By collecting 49,716, they can suspend the law until voters get to decide on the 2026 ballot.  The Civil Rights Coalition’s effort is not just about firearms; it is about defending the broader principle of individual liberty.

“When any aspect of the Constitution is compromised—whether it’s the right to free speech, religion, or the right to bear arms—we risk opening the door to further erosion of our civil liberties.  H4885 exemplifies this slippery slope, where government overreach threatens to undermine the very freedoms the Constitution was designed to protect,” said John Briare.

“What we have witnessed with the passage of H.4885 is the worst attack on civil rights in Modern U.S. history. This entire effort represented nothing less than a tantrum by Massachusetts politicians because the Supreme Court of the United States told them they could not treat our community like second class citizens. Those that forced this through will be forever associated with the likes of Governor Wallace, of Alabama, after Brown V. Board of Education,” said Jim Wallace Executive Director of GOAL. “The fact that the final legislation was drafted in secrecy and only released hours before a vote should tell every citizen that the proponents of H.4885 knew that it could not survive the light of day.”

“This is not modernization of laws.  It is an attack our everyone’s civil rights that are guaranteed in the United States and Massachusetts constitutions.  The law has completely tossed out our constitutional rights to grab a headline in an election year to appear tough on crime.  Our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves.  I am proud to be part of this effort to restore our rights,” said Senator Peter Durant.

The grassroot organization now has 700 people, 56 organizations, and 68 businesses collecting signatures.
