The motorcycle route will attempt to retrace Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride from his house in Boston to the Lexington Battle Green, sticking as closely as possible to his historical path while adapting it for a modern ride.

Revere’s ride on April 18, 1775, began in Boston’s North End, crossed the Charles River to Charlestown, and proceeded through Somerville, Medford, and Arlington (then Menotomy) before reaching Lexington.

The goal was to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock of British troop movements, culminating at the Lexington Green, where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired the next morning. This route will balance historical accuracy with practical considerations for a motorcycle, like road conditions and traffic, while offering a scenic and engaging ride

Detailed Route

  • Paul Revere House to Charlestown (Approx. 1.5 miles)
o Start: Leave Lot turning Left on Commercial, Turn Right onto Cross street, and Turn Right at the North Street park to Roll by Paul Revere House onto North Square.
o Route: Head north on Prince St (a narrow, historic street—watch for pedestrians). Turn right onto Hanover St, then left onto Commercial St. Follow Commercial St toward the Charlestown Bridge. Cross the bridge (modern equivalent of Revere’s rowboat crossing) onto North Washington St in Charlestown.
o Notes: Revere didn’t ride from his house; he was rowed across the Charles from near the Old North Church. For simplicity, we start at his home. The bridge offers a smooth ride with views of the river—keep an eye on traffic, as it’s a busy area.
o Historical Stop: Pause near Warren St and Main St in Charlestown, where Revere borrowed a horse from John Larkin. No exact spot exists today, but this is the general area.
  • Charlestown to Medford (Approx. 4.5 miles)
o Route: From Main St, head northwest. Turn left onto Chelsea St, then right onto Rutherford Ave. Merge onto MA-38 N (Mystic Ave) toward Somerville/Medford. Follow Mystic Ave through Somerville, staying on MA-38 N as it becomes Main St in Medford.
o Notes: Revere rode through modern-day Somerville and Medford, alarming homes along the way. Mystic Ave is a busy arterial road—ride cautiously, especially at night. The route roughly parallels his path, avoiding the Loyalist Royall Mansion area he skirted.
o Historical Stop: Isaac Hall House (private residence), 70 High St, Medford. Revere stopped here to alert the militia captain. You can’t enter, but pause nearby to imagine the moment.
  • Medford to Arlington (Approx. 3 miles)
o Route: Continue on MA-38 N (Main St) from Medford. Cross the Mystic River into Arlington, where Main St becomes Massachusetts Ave. Follow Massachusetts Ave west through Arlington Center.
o Notes: This stretch, once Menotomy, saw Revere alerting more homes. Massachusetts Ave is a wide, well-paved road, ideal for motorcycles, though traffic can build in Arlington Center during the day. At night, it’s quieter—perfect for a “midnight” vibe.
o Historical Stop: Jason Russell House, 7 Jason St, Arlington (just off Massachusetts Ave). Revere may have warned residents here; it later became a bloody battle site on April 19. It’s a quick detour—turn left onto Jason St, then backtrack.
  • Arlington to Lexington Battle Green (Approx. 4 miles)
o Route: Continue west on Massachusetts Ave from Arlington into Lexington. Pass Munroe Tavern (1425 Massachusetts Ave) on your left, a Patriot HQ Revere didn’t visit that night but worth noting. Arrive at the Lexington Battle Green, where Massachusetts Ave meets Bedford St.
  • Notes: This final leg is a straight shot on Massachusetts Ave, a smooth, scenic ride through suburban Lexington. The Green is a triangular park with a parking area—ideal for dismounting. Revere reached the Hancock-Clarke House (36 Hancock St, 0.25 miles north) around midnight, but the Green marks the battle site and ride’s symbolic end.
o End Point: Park at the Battle Green. Reflect on Revere’s arrival and the chaos that followed hours later.

  • Ride Tips
    • Timing: For authenticity, ride after dark (e.g., around 10 PM EDT on March 11, 2025, it’s dark by 7 PM). Traffic will be lighter, and the atmosphere closer to Revere’s experience.
    • Gear: Wear reflective gear and a helmet—Massachusetts law requires helmets. Roads are mostly smooth, but urban sections may have potholes.
